Romania Travel Guide: Exploring Sibiu, Brasov & Cluj-Napoca

Tucked away in Eastern Europe, Romania is a country where medieval towns rise against dramatic mountain backdrops, where folklore and history blend seamlessly, and where travelers are greeted with warmth and sincerity. Often associated with Transylvania and the legendary tales of Dracula, Romania is far more than myth — it is a destination of rich culture, architecture, gastronomy, and breathtaking nature.

My inaugural European voyage took me across thousands of kilometers from Bangkok to the heart of Romania, where I explored three captivating cities: Sibiu, Brasov, and Cluj-Napoca. Each offered its own story, its own rhythm, and its own way of making me feel at home.

The Journey from Bangkok to Romania

Traveling from Asia to Romania is no small feat. My route with Qatar Airways began with a seven-hour flight from Bangkok to Doha, followed by a long 22-hour layover in Doha Airport. From there, I continued on a six-and-a-half-hour flight to Bucharest, Romania’s capital, then boarded a short domestic connection with Tarom Airlines to Cluj, followed by a scenic two-hour drive to Sibiu.

The journey was demanding, but each step brought me closer to the storybook landscapes of Transylvania.

Flight Costs

Qatar Airways (Bangkok ⇄ Bucharest): 36,715 THB
Tarom Airlines (domestic): 9,560 THB
Total: ~46,275 THB

For long-haul travelers, this gives a realistic view of what to expect when planning a Romanian escape.

Practical Notes: Currency & Connectivity

  • Currency: Romania uses the Romanian Leu (RON).

    • 1 EUR ≈ 5 RON

    • 1 USD ≈ 4.6 RON

    • 1 THB ≈ 0.13 RON
Cards are widely accepted, but carrying cash is useful for small towns and markets.

  • SIM & Wi-Fi: I pre-booked an eSIM via KKDay (14-day package, 764 THB), which activated upon arrival in Bucharest. It ran on the Orange Romania network with 5GB of data, offering seamless coverage even in smaller towns. A highly recommended option for Asian travelers who want reliable internet without the hassle of buying a physical SIM.

Romania at a Glance

Region: Eastern Europe, bordered by Hungary, Serbia, Ukraine, and Bulgaria.
Capital: Bucharest, often nicknamed the “Paris of the East.”
Language: Romanian (English is moderately spoken, especially in cities).
Religion: Orthodox Christianity is predominant.
Size: 238,397 km² — making it the 12th largest country in Europe.
Seasons: Romania has four distinct seasons — spring blossoms, warm summers, colorful autumns, and snowy winters, each bringing its own charm and activities.

Sibiu – The Enchanting Gateway

Arriving in Sibiu felt like stepping into a storybook. Compact yet full of character, the city reminded me of ancient towns in Asia like Tainan in Taiwan or Sukhothai in Thailand — intimate, historic, and layered with stories.

  • History & Recognition: Sibiu was named the European Capital of Culture in 2007 and the European Region of Gastronomy in 2019.

  • Architecture: The city is famous for its pastel-colored houses and “watchful eyes” — the half-moon windows on rooftops that seem to follow you, offering both charm and a sense of protection.

  • Christmas Market: If visiting in winter, Sibiu’s Christmas Market is one of Europe’s most magical, filling the main square with light, laughter, and seasonal delicacies.

  • Nature & Activities: Nestled in the Carpathians, Sibiu is perfect for horseback riding, hiking, or simply admiring snow-capped peaks.

  • Food & People: Hearty soups, bread, and generous portions define the cuisine, but it was the hospitality of Sibiu’s people that left the deepest impression. Everyone greets you warmly, and simple gestures like saying “thank you” feel genuine and heartwarming.

Brasov – Legends, History & First Snow

Known as the birthplace of the Dracula legend, Brasov is a city that wears its history proudly.

  • Landmarks: The Black Church, an imposing Gothic structure, stands as a reminder of the city’s medieval past. Nearby, the iconic Bran Castle draws travelers intrigued by Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

  • Winter Magic: Brasov is framed by mountains and home to ski resorts like Poiana Brasov. It was here that I witnessed my first snowfall, an experience that made the city unforgettable.

  • Atmosphere: Beyond its landmarks, Brasov is a city of lively squares, cobblestone alleys, and welcoming cafés. The balance of legend, history, and romance makes it a must-visit in Romania.

Cluj-Napoca – Vibrant & Cosmopolitan

Cluj was my final stop before returning to Bucharest, a lively university town full of cafés, art, and modern energy. While I didn’t explore as many attractions here as in Sibiu and Brasov, it stood out as a gateway to the Salina Turda salt mine and a hub that blends tradition with youth culture.

  • Modern Vibe: A bustling university city, Cluj buzzes with youthful energy, cultural events, and vibrant cafés.

  • Tradition Meets Now: Despite its cosmopolitan face, Cluj still carries historic charm, with Baroque architecture and traditional markets.

  • Nearby Wonders: Just outside the city, the Salina Turda salt mine is a breathtaking underground world — part museum, part amusement park, and part natural wonder.

Cluj is ideal for those seeking a blend of modern living and historical discovery, and it serves as a convenient hub for flights back to Bucharest.

Reflections on Romania

Romania gave me more than sights — it gave me memories.

  • Sibiu offered medieval charm and cultural depth.

  • Brasov balanced history, legend, and natural beauty.

  • Cluj brought modern energy to my Transylvanian journey.

What tied them together was the hospitality of the people. In every town, I felt welcomed, safe, and connected — a reminder that travel is not only about places, but about the warmth of those who greet you there.

Romania is a land of legends and landscapes, but above all, it is a country of kindness. My journey there left me with memories I will treasure forever — stories of culture, nature, and connection in the heart of Europe.
