Experience Okinawan Culture: Dress in Traditional Ryuso at Chura Bijin Studio

Experience Okinawan Culture: Dress in Traditional Ryuso at Chura Bijin Studio

When we think of Okinawa, we often imagine its tropical beaches, relaxed island lifestyle, and the colorful kariyushi shirts that locals wear as a summer alternative to business suits. But Okinawa’s fashion heritage goes much deeper — tracing back to the Ryukyu Kingdom, where vivid textiles and flowing robes were a symbol of culture and pride.

During my trip to Okinawa, I discovered a unique way to connect with this heritage: renting and wearing a Ryuso (琉装), the traditional clothing of Okinawa. My experience took place at Chura Bijin Studio, located right along the famous Kokusai Dori shopping street.

🌸 What is Ryuso?

Ryuso is the traditional costume of Okinawa, characterized by its bright colors, lightweight fabrics, and floral motifs known as bingata. The style reflects the island’s subtropical climate, with flowing sleeves and breathable textures. Unlike kimono or yukata from mainland Japan, Ryuso carries the distinct identity of Okinawa’s history as the Ryukyu Kingdom, influenced by trade with China and Southeast Asia.

For travelers, dressing in Ryuso offers not only a fun cultural activity but also the chance to experience Okinawa’s heritage firsthand — and, of course, capture beautiful photos.

Chura Bijin Studio makes the experience accessible and welcoming, even for international visitors:

  • They help with hair styling and basic makeup (lip color provided).

  • In the studio, staff guide you through poses to get the best cultural portraits.

📸 Packages Available

  1. Studio Shoot (20 minutes) – ¥3,000 (~789 THB / $24 USD / €22)
A quick, professional portrait session in traditional attire.

  2. Studio + Outdoor Stroll (3 hours) – ¥4,800 (~1,256 THB / $38 USD / €35)
After studio photos, you can walk outside in full costume to explore Kokusai Dori, take lifestyle shots, and enjoy the city atmosphere.

👉 I highly recommend the second package — being able to stroll the lively streets of Naha in Ryuso makes the experience feel even more special.

👗 Outfit Choices

Guests can choose from three traditional styles:

  • Kimono (classic Japanese style)

  • Yukata (light summer robe)

  • Ryuso (distinctive Okinawan attire)

I chose the Ryuso, and it was the perfect way to connect with Okinawa’s vibrant culture.
